Registration Interviews

We interview all candidates who wish to register with us, ideally face to face, as soon as there is a potentially suitable vacancy to discuss with you. Interviews take 30-40 minutes and are designed to gain a clear picture about the type of work that you are seeking. We will also advise you about the types of jobs available and how to maximise your CV.

Interviews are held Monday to Friday in our London Bridge office. Additionally we may also hold interviews in major cities across the UK.

You must bring the following to your interview:

  • proof of your British citizenship or right to work in the UK. Full details of acceptable documentation are given here
  • names and addresses of two referees if you require temporary work
  • copies of relevant information degree certificates

When you arrive for your interview, we will ask you if we can take a digital photograph for our records (this is so we have an aide memoire only - we guarantee never to send the image to our clients).

Travelling to Australia?
We will give you an introduction to our Australian colleagues before you travel. Ask for details.

Candidate FAQs

What kind of vacancies do you have?
Typical vacancies include: librarian, information manager, researcher, information specialist, knowledge manager, records manager, archivist, database manager and content editor. We also work with suppliers to our sector to source publishing, editing, sales, marketing and customer service staff. Roles cover permanent, temporary, full-time and part-time jobs, as well as consultancy contracts, from assistant to senior management level.

What locations do you cover?
We recruit for the whole of the UK. The majority of our jobs are based in London and the South East simply because there are so many organisations in that area but we do get roles for the Midlands, the North, the South West, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland too. From time to time we get work abroad.

How do I register with Sue Hill Recruitment?
Registering with us is very simple. Please see How to Register.

How do you match my details up to jobs?
When you register with SHR, the consultant who interviews you assigns codes to your record to indicate what skills and experience you have and what criteria you are looking for in a new role. When we receive a new job, we search our database of candidates using both code and free-text searching of candidates’ CVs to create a long list which we read through to create a short list of candidates to contact about the role.

How will I be contacted about jobs?
We will generally contact you via email, text or phone to alert you to jobs that may be of interest. You can also check the web site, which is updated in real time, and contact us if you see an interesting role.

Who will contact me about roles?
Our consultants search the entire database of candidates when looking for suitable people for roles. Therefore, any of our consultants may contact you about jobs they have. This way you are not restricted to the jobs of the consultant who interviewed you at registration but are considered for any vacancies registered with us.

How do I keep in touch and how often?
There is no need to contact us regularly to let us know you are still looking for work. We will continue to look for jobs for you unless you tell us otherwise. We would like to know if you change your contact details or if your circumstances change - e.g. you have different salary requirements or you relocate – so that we can continue to contact you about suitable roles. When we contact you about jobs, even if you think they are unsuitable, please get back to us and tell us why so we can get a better picture of what you’re looking for and don’t keep sending you roles that won’t be of interest.

How long will it take to find me something?
This is really a ‘how long is a piece of string’ question. Sometimes the right type of job, in the right location, at the right salary and at the right type of organisation, comes in straight away and you get invited for interview and offered the first job you go for, and it can all happen within a couple of weeks. On the other hand, it could take several months for the right job to come in, or you could go for several interviews before getting an offer, and the process would take longer.

Would you ever put forward my CV for a job without consulting me first?
No, we will always contact you about roles of interest before putting your CV forward to clients. If we do not hear back from you that you are interested in a role, we will take no further action.

What happens if a client you have sent my CV to wants to ask me for an interview?
We will contact you by phone, text or email, depending on circumstances, to let you know that the client would like to interview you and will arrange a mutually convenient time for this. We will send you an interview confirmation letter or email with all the details you need prior to interview.

How can I prepare for an interview?
For hints and tips on how to do well at interview, please see our pages on Successful Interviews and Competency Interviews.

What happens after I’ve had an interview at an organisation?
Please phone or email us to let us know how you think it went, whether you are still interested in the role and any questions you might have. We make every effort to get constructive feedback on your interview from the client but as a minimum we will tell you if you were successful or not.

How would I be notified of a job offer?
If you are going for a temporary role, the job offer will come through us and we will organise everything that needs to happen for you to start your new job.
If the role is permanent, we will contact you with a verbal offer. The written offer from the client follows and the client will take up your references. Only then should you hand your notice in.

I’ve been told I have to have a CRB check, why is that?
Many library roles involve contact with children or vulnerable adults and it is a legal requirement to have a Criminal Records Bureau check carried out. The check involves coming into our office, filling out a form and bringing in a number of documents. Your consultant will go through it with you in detail if this situation arises.

How secure is my personal data such as my CV and contact details?
We are registered under the Data Protection Act 1998 and take great care to ensure that all personal data is kept safely. We never download data onto discs, and everything is backed up onto secure servers. Out of date e-data is securely deleted. Personal information on paper is sealed into tagged bags taken by an unmarked tracked van to a secure location for destruction.

I am no longer looking for a job, should I tell you?
Yes, please tell us if you are not longer looking for work. This stops us contacting you with jobs you are not interested in. When you are next looking for work, simply tell us that you want to re-register and we’ll invite you for an update interview.
